Where the Rubber Meets (and Talks to) the Road

Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII): this research proposal describes a project between California DOT (Caltrans), California PATH and DaimlerChrysler RTNA that will demonstrate two potential VII services, one in traffic data probes and anotheer with safety, using real cars and on Caltrans roadways. This applied research project presages an operational test and a deployment. It explores and resolves key engineering issues associated with the point deployment of these services in a realistic setting. As such, it will pave the way for VII by in effect jump-starting technological work. This project will also demonstrate that Caltrans can do VII and create VII cahmpions, within and outside of Caltrans. In the end there will be a demonstration of the VII-type services investigated by this project, with interested in-State and national VII players invited.
